NBC/Universal
NBC has a long history of providing quality programs starting in the radio days. Television boomed in the late 40's early 50's and NBC paved the way with Texico Star Theater with Milton Bearle. I have enjoyed more programs over the years on NBC than any other network. I have fond memories of watching sitcoms like The Cosby Show and Cheers, action shows like the A-Team, crime dramas like Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice and Homicide, medical dramas like St. Elsewhere and ER, science fiction shows like V and Knight Rider (I'm looking forward to the remake), Saturday morning shows like Spider Man and his Amazing Friends and the Smurfs and variety shows like The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live on NBC. I often watch NBC news programs to keep up with current affairs.
It is my experience NBC offered better quality shows than the other networks. NBC had something special to offer. The shows were more flashy and fun than what was on other networks.
I was very excited to hear that NBC was going to remake The Bionic Woman. I grew up watching both The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. I watched those shows when they were first on, in syndication and on The Sci-Fi Channel in the 90's. I also watched the TV movie reunions. Growing up I had and still own many of the toys, books, comics and models associated with the two shows.
The month Bionic Woman premiered I set up a display of my collection in the bank in the town I live in. I also put pictures of Michelle Ryan in the display. My name was mentioned in the local paper. Many people in my town enjoyed that display. Kids really responded to it and was quite interested in the display. I had strangers come up to me after the showed first aired asking me if I saw it and they seemed to enjoy the new series.
Michelle Ryan was an interesting choice and a good one. She has an iconic look all her own. She's quite striking in her dark outfit and long dark hair. She has a look of intensity and she great at the physical stunt work. I've seen her recently on PBS in Mansfield Park and she was great. She was also very good in Jekyll.
The other actors were all well cast too. I watched Miguel Ferrer on Crossing Jordon and Molly Price on Third Watch. I was familiar with Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica.
The Ruth character has this wonderful dead pan sense of humor I really enjoy. Jonas is a wonderfully complex character. Nathan has that nervousness and insecurity combined with intelligence which makes him interesting. Sarah Corvus is so intense and unique.
I like and want to know more about these facinating characters. I want to learn more about Berkut. I want to follow Jaime as she goes on this journey. I want to see her sister Becca grow and mature. I want to learn more about Jaime's Bionics and how they effect her physically and emotionally.
I know the show's ratings have been disappointing. I know the series got off to a rocky start. I know the WGA strike has effected production. The fans have been told Jason Cahill was hired as the new show runner and there were plans to relaunch the series.
I've never contacted a network and asked them to renew a series. Often shows live the shelf life they deserve. A show doesn't do well enough when it first aires in order for it to continue or a show goes on long enough and it ends at the right time. I've always quietly accepted those decisions to end programs and understood the reasons why.
I believe these is an audience out there who really want to watch Bionic Woman. There have only been eight aired episodes and the story was just starting. I felt the series was finding it's voice when production was shut down. I ask NBC/Universal to seriously consider relaunching the series. If it is felt the show isn't strong enough for NBC then please consider airing it on Sci-Fi or the USA network. I believe it would fit well on Sci-Fi. I have to add I'm really pleased I'll be able to watch the new series of Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures on Sci-Fi.
There are a handful of haters who troll on various televison, science fiction and fantasy websites who are determined to bash the show, the actors and production team in hopes of getting it cancelled. They have told lies about individuals involved with Bionic Woman. They would be thrilled if the series was cancelled. Please don't give them the satisfaction.
The country is down right now. The ecomony is weakening. People are divided over politics. We live in an uncertain time. We need heroes to root for. We need character like Jaime Sommers to care about. She has such dignity and physical strength. I think we need women heroes everyone can look up to. The original Bionic Woman came around during an uncertain time and was very successful and I believe the current series can be too. Entertainment programs should have substance and Bionic Woman does. It asks the viewer questions concerning and the ethical uses of technology.
Michelle Ryan is well known in the UK. The original Bionic Woman series was well known all over the world, was heavily merchandised and did well in syndication for years after it ceased production. This new version could do the same thing if given another chance. The ingrediants are all there, casting, premise and characters. It just needs a bit more polishing and I believe a new creative team could really improve the series so it would find an audience.
If this message reaches those who make decisions regarding programming at NBC or their cable outlets, I thank you for making the series and for taking the time to read my comments. I'm only speaking for myself and I'm only one viewer but I felt the need in this instance to share my views.
