I have one of the Kenner Six Million Dollar Man movie viewers and some film cartridges (Six Mil and Snoopy cartoons). They also made Star Wars, Bionic Woman and Alien film tapes. I also have a snoopy drive in viewer which is a redo of the Six Mil Video Center. I don't know how many times I watched those 8MM loops but they have scratches in them and a few broken sockets making the film skip.
I saw Grindhouse today. The film is full of scratches and bad splices, faded out scenes and missing reels. I'm not going to go into a lengthy plot decription.
Planet Terror:
It does start with a fake movie trailer called Machete which is shockly fun. Planet Terror is a violent, gross, disgusting zombie movie. There isn't much of a plot. A military experiment goes wrong and infects people turning them into zombies. I always like Rose McGowan and she's pretty good in this. A group of survivors have to fight off the zombies as they take over the town. It's full of explosions and gun battles and very graphic make up effects. The acting and script is very OTT. And Rose, who plays a character called Cherry Darling, gets a machine gun for a leg which she uses to gun down the zombies. Part of the film is missing leaving us confused how we got from point A to B. And just when the film gets a bit talky something wild happens.
If you're in the right mood it can be fun to watch. Then we get some weird food ads and some more very funny phoney movie trailers like Don't and Thanksgiving. And if you went to the movies in the 70's or 80's, they've put in some of the bumpers for coming attractions.
Death Proof:
I thought this was rather disappointing. It isn't good but it isn't terrible either. It's very uneven. Parts of it are good. There are some scratches and a few missing scenes but it isn't as effective as in Planet Terror. Kurt Russel as Stuntman Mike is really good and we get to see some characters from Planet Terror which is fun.
There's a group of women characters we meet which are pretty annoying. All they do is get drunk, smoke dope and swear alot. The swearing goes way overboard. We meet another group of women characters half way through and they just as annoying.
It's very talky without much action. There are some scenes which work but overall it's pretty dull.
It's an experiece to watch these movies in a theater in one sitting. You do get your money's worth but I thought the first film was much better than the second. _________________ You are a facinating blend of beauty and truely remarkable strength. |

I took advantage of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend to pay a few visits to the cinema
The Hills Have Eyes II (2007)
Grim, nihilistic horror movie, sadistically violent and deeply unpleasant to watch. Scared the C**p out of me admittedly, so I suppose it achieved what it set out to do at least but not an easy viewing experience for this timid heart
Sunshine (2007)
Danny Boyle does sci-fi, superb film with a well-rounded ensemble cast and effective screenplay by Alex Garland (The Beach). It all gets a bit odd in the last act but it’s still a very strong film.
Blades of Glory (2007)
Love it or hate it comedy about a male ice-skating pair, Stars Will Ferrell and Jon Heder which pretty much is all you need to know, if you don’t like them you will hate this. Thought it had some pretty good lines myself and the Iron Lotus has to be seen to be believed
The Messengers (2007)
Creepy horror about a family who move into a farm house, young Kristen Miller is the lead and pretty much carries the movie along. After a succession of stalk and slash horror movies (see above) this more old fashioned style was a welcome change, It’s very atmospheric and has an emphasis on the unseen threat hiding in the shadows, the twist in the final act was a genuine surprise as well _________________ www.wantagecinema.com

I saw Spiderman 3 today. It's a good movie. I liked the other two Spiderman films and I enjoyed this one as well. I think if you liked the other Spiderman films you'll enjoy this movie.
The production values are very good. The visual effects are great. A few bits here and there look CGI but most of the effects are realistic. The Sandman effects were great as well as the Vemon effects. I was very impressed with the acting.
You don't have to be a comic book super fan to follow the story. My mother went with me and she asked me who Sandman was and who Venom was but she followed it without any trouble. She liked it too and she's not a super hero expert.
The plot is a bit much for one film. There are several storylines going on. It's a bit front loaded. It does all work out in the end. It is not disjointed like some of the Batman films. There's a story about Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, Venom, Sandman, Harry Osborne and the Venom suit. I thought the Harry Osborne story was the weak link. It's a bit dull.
I did enjoy it. It has a good pacing and it's very well made. The action scenes are really impressive. _________________ You are a facinating blend of beauty and truely remarkable strength. |

Spider-man 3 is indeed a very good film and - unlike some 2 hour + Block busters i could mention has more than enough plot to cover the extended running time
The FX have come on so far in the few years since the first Spider-man movie it's astounding, as you say Judd it looks so realistic for the most part.
The performances and charectorisation are strong, and even the retconning of Ben Parker's muder which I was concerned about beforehand, is handled convincingly.
I'd also recommend Bridge to Terebrithia which is one of the best films about Childhood I've ever seen, with two wonderfully natural leads and an ending that reduced this grown man to tears _________________ www.wantagecinema.com
